Lost access to your crypto? Here are the 5 recovery paths, by scenario.

"Lost crypto" isn't one problem — it's at least five different ones, each with its own recovery path. If you already know you were scammed, our step-by-step recovery guide covers that process in detail. This guide is for figuring out which of the five situations below actually applies to you first.

Scenario 1: Stolen by a Scammer

This is the most common scenario and the one where professional intervention makes the biggest difference.

If your crypto was stolen through a scam — romance fraud, fake platform, pig-butchering, fake wallet — the funds left an on-chain trail. CoinTrace Pro's blockchain forensics can trace that trail, identify where funds currently sit, and pursue freeze requests and other recovery action.

Recovery probability: Case-dependent, but acting within 48–72 hours meaningfully improves your odds. It decreases as funds are laundered through mixers and OTC desks.

Immediate actions: Stop all contact with the scammer, preserve all evidence, file with IC3, contact CoinTrace Pro, contact your exchange.

Scenario 2: Exchange Hack or Insolvency

Exchange hacks and insolvencies (FTX, Celsius, Voyager) have cost millions of crypto holders their funds. Recovery options depend on the specific circumstances:

Exchange hack recovery: If a legitimate exchange was hacked and your funds were stolen, you typically have a claim against the exchange under their user agreement. Most major exchanges carry insurance against hacks. File a formal claim with the exchange immediately and monitor class action developments.

Exchange insolvency: If your exchange filed for bankruptcy, you are a creditor. File a proof of claim in the bankruptcy proceedings. FTX and Celsius creditors are receiving partial recoveries through the bankruptcy process. Hire a crypto-specialized bankruptcy attorney for larger claims.

Fraudulent exchange (exit scam): If the exchange itself was fraudulent, treat this as a scam case and engage blockchain forensics immediately.

Scenario 3: Inaccessible Wallet (Lost Keys or Seed Phrase)

This is a different type of loss — there's no criminal involved, but your assets are locked. Recovery options:

Partial password/PIN recovery: If you remember most of a password, specialized tools can attempt variations. CoinTrace Pro's wallet recovery service uses legal, consent-based approaches to attempt access recovery.

Corrupted wallet file: Depending on the wallet software and the nature of the corruption, recovery may be possible. Preserve the wallet file — do not attempt repeated password guesses as some wallets increase lockout times after failed attempts.

Hardware wallet recovery: If you have your 24-word seed phrase, you can recover your hardware wallet on a new device. If you've lost the seed phrase but have the device, contact the manufacturer's support first.

Deceased estate recovery: If you are trying to recover a deceased family member's cryptocurrency, CoinTrace Pro can assist with wallet access recovery in conjunction with the appropriate legal documentation.

Scenario 4: Funds Seized by Authorities

Law enforcement seizure of cryptocurrency is increasingly common. If your funds were seized as part of an investigation — particularly if you were unknowingly involved with a fraudulent scheme — you may have legal avenues to recover them.

This requires specialist legal counsel with cryptocurrency law expertise. CoinTrace Pro can produce the blockchain forensic documentation showing the legitimate provenance of your funds to support such a legal claim.

Scenario 5: Sent to the Wrong Address

Cryptocurrency sent to the wrong address is not technically 'lost' — it still exists on the blockchain. Recovery depends on who owns that address:

If you sent to a mistyped address that doesn't exist: the funds are unrecoverable in most cases (though some chains reject transfers to invalid addresses).

If you sent to an existing address by mistake: if you can identify the owner, contact them directly. If it went to an exchange's deposit address, contact the exchange's support with full transaction details — some exchanges can recover misdirected funds with proper documentation.

If you accidentally sent to a contract address: depending on the contract, recovery may be possible. Consult a smart contract developer or contact CoinTrace Pro.
